This is an image of the truck that the City of Dayton uses to hold the camera's that go in the sewers.
Day 3- Water Day
Today was filled with a lot of learning. The day started off with us writing poetry, like usual. The type of poetry we did today was very different. You would have a noun with two adjectives and connect them with more nouns to create a story. For today, we each came up with a noun and two adjectives and we had to connect ours with the rest of our group's nouns and adjectives. My group’s poem is down at the bottom of this post. We also learned about the water system in Dayton, Ohio. We went to five different stations. At the first station, we tested water from our school’s tap water. We learned about how chemical spills happened in Dayton and what Dayton does when a spill happens. Then, we learned about the watershed and the sewage and storm drains that flow in Dayton. When we were listening to the woman with the power point, we were introduced to the topic of Dayton’s aquifer. Since Dayton lives above an aquifer we get all of our fresh water from there. In the other stations, we heard about the different cameras that the city uses to see where leaks are coming from in the sewage or storm pipes. In the second to last station, we learned more about the floods of Dayton and the aquifer. At the very last station, we learned about the different careers that involve managing the city’s water.
Today, I learned that Dayton’s water comes from the aquifer that lies below us. Water is very important because we need clean drinking water to survive. It is also important because of all of the animals and plants that need water. I think that understanding the importance of water and how the city works will help me live more deliberately because I know how everything works and I know what to do to keep the water in our city clean. Today helped me to know more about how to live deliberately.
My Poem of the Day
The River
The River, flowing and free
That held all the water, clear and cold
Where the fish, vibrant and active, swam all day
And the sand, tan and grainy, is river’s foundation
With the mud, damp and squishy, helping to build the solid ground
And the rocks, strong and rough, added the texture to river
With trees, bold and firm, adding the protection
And the hills, tall and wide, that caught the water and sent it back to the
River, flowing and free
By Maddie, Lizzie, Ally, Justin, Camryn, Ellie, and Kristen
